Supporting an Innovative Culture: Commonwealth Bank’s Innovation Lab Strengthens WSABE Winner Experience
Following their outstanding year at the 27th annual Western Sydney Awards for Business Excellence (WSABE), The Lido Group have ended their WSABE experience on a high with a complimentary Innovation Lab Sandpit Session, courtesy of Principal Partner, Commonwealth Bank. In addition to receiving the Excellence in Business Award at the WSABE Gala in September, The Lido Group were also conferred WSABE’s highly coveted Commonwealth Bank Business of the Year Award. The Business of the Year is the pinnacle award in the WSABE program, recognizing one outstanding business who have demonstrated overall excellence throughout the financial year. The Lido Group embarked on their Innovation Lab experience on Monday 13 November at Commonwealth Bank’s Sydney location, situated in the city’s picturesque Darling Quarter.
As a platform committed to nurturing innovation and entrepreneurialism in Western Sydney, WSABE is pleased to have been able to offer this exciting opportunity to The Lido Group, thanks to their valued partners at Commonwealth Bank. As Western Sydney is increasingly developing into a core hub of residential and business activity, it is imperative that the WSABE platform accounts for the influx of young businesses and professionals that will ultimately continue driving the development of the region. In recent years, the WSABE platform has been revitalized to account for these changes, with awards such as the Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Excellence in Innovation, and Startup Superstar implemented to provide incentives for these businesses to continue disrupting status-quo and pushing the boundaries of how business is operated.
Commonwealth Bank’s innovation Labs are dedicated to introducing clients around the world to the innovation process and providing the tools and technology to enable faster collaboration and ideation than ever before. An extension of the Innovation Lab experience, the Sandpit sessions feature a collection of workshops and discussions that provide insights into the Commonwealth Bank innovation story and showcase the journey that they embarked on to drive their strategic objectives in innovation. Ultimately, the objective is to explore learnings and strategies that businesses can integrate into their own approach to drive innovation and ensure that they remain one step ahead of the competition. Offering a total of 17 unique topics, Commonwealth Bank ensures that their Innovation Lab Sandpit sessions are directly relevant to a broad spectrum of businesses and industries.
The Lido Group is Australia and New Zealand’s market-leading corporate and government accommodation aggregator and provider of managed accommodation programs and integrated payment solutions. Their product and service offerings remain ahead of the game by offering varying services based around their client’s specific needs. The Lido Group’s Innovation Lab experience featured three workshops that were specifically selected to fit their business model. These included topics such as maintaining an innovative workplace culture, design thinking and how it can be used in service delivery, and the capabilities of data analytics for tailoring a product or service to suit a customer’s needs.
When asked about the place of innovation in The Lido Group’s business model, CEO, Steve Mackenzie stressed the importance of agility, noting that “When it comes to development, it’s not just a word for us. It’s exactly what we do and how we do it, so we have to do everything very smart and very quick, and if we continue kicking an idea around for months and months and building it, we’re too late. We need to stay ahead of the game, and that’s where we are, ahead of the game.”
Given The Lido Group’s customer-focused business mantra, Ash Blake’s workshop and case study session on design thinking resonated particularly strongly with the team of fifteen that arrived on the day. One member of the Lido Group noted, “I actually thought that what Ash did for the retail customer was a really quirky idea. Rather than simply cutting the cost and reducing foot traffic, he pulled off something that was out of the box which I thought was great. Overall it was a really engaging experience and I really enjoyed myself, it was great.”

The awards platform recognises outstanding businesses by celebrating their success stories and profiling their achievements amongst the wider business community.
