In the absence of a full privatisation model for
NSW’s electricity supply, the NSW Government’s announcement of their energy
package is the second best solution for the state, according to NSW’s leading
business organisation, NSW Business Chamber.
“Today’s announcement is a step in the right
direction of securing NSW’s energy supply but business would like to see a
firmer timetable for how this will be achieved,” said Kevin MacDonald, CEO of
NSW Business Chamber.
“The NSW Government needs to spell out why completing
this transaction by the end of 2009 will guarantee the supply of electricity
over the coming decades.
“Time is running out if we are to ensure that the
lights in NSW will stay on in the next 10 to 20 years.”
Mr MacDonald welcomed the NSW Government’s open
mindedness about the source of fuel that would be used to power the stations
and said that any debate about fuel sources should include solar, wind,
geothermal and nuclear power.
“Any serious debate about the future supply of
electricity must include a mature debate about renewable sources and that
includes nuclear power.” Mr MacDonald concluded.
