Federal Budget OK for Parramatta
Last
week's federal budget brought some good news for Parramatta and its surrounding
areas. The government has invested heavily in training and job creation and
given a much needed fillip to manufacturing. Health has benefited from targeted
injections of funding, in particular mental health.
Looking
at the budget as a whole can be a bit confusing when trying to work out the
benefits to a local community, but in this case the benefits for Parramatta are
reasonably clear.
All
industries benefit from training and job creation and Parramatta boasts a great
deal of heavy manufacturing in close proximity. We also have a large and
constantly expanding residential sector, so the equation is simple; more jobs
for more people. Parramatta also has the training facilities to service the
local sector with a university, a community college and specialist employment
placement agencies all standing to benefit from the increased funding.
Health
funding is of great importance to Parramatta with the health precinct at
Westmead; which has the dual benefit of serving the community and providing a
crucial employment node.
And
there is money for transport and regional development; key supplements to the
budget's job creation initiatives and something for which this Chamber has long
been lobbying government.
